FAQs

Some frequently asked questions about Ancient Greece!

How tall was Alexander the Great?

Arrian noted that Alexander was somewhat shorter than average, while Curtius described him as not particularly impressive in physique or stature. Artistic depictions suggest he was muscular with good leg length and somewhat stocky, implying Curtius referred to his height. The average height during that era is uncertain, but Macedonians, likely better nourished than Southern Greeks due to access to grazing land, were probably taller. Some scholars propose that the armor from Tomb II in Vergina, Macedonia, belonged to either Alexander or Philip, fitting someone 5’2” or shorter. Since neither king was popular with Greek writers, it seems unlikely that such a notable lack of height would go unmentioned by contemporaries. This armor likely belonged to Arrhidaeous' wife, who might have been a warrior herself.
